Corey began hunting with his dad and uncles when he was ten years old. Hunting was fun, but it wasn’t until a few years later that a neighbor gave Corey’s family a German Wirehaired Pointer. This changed everything. Corey marveled at watching the dogs tirelessly work. They would stay in the rice patties and corn fields all day if you let them, no matter what punishment their bodies were under. It was truly amazing, and Corey couldn’t wait for one of his own.
Well, that wait ended up being about 20 years. Once Corey finally got his first dog, Otto, all he wanted to do was go chase birds. He started out with Hunt Tests, but everyone told him he actually had a Field Trial dog. Reluctantly, Corey entered Otto in a puppy stake at a Field Trial and they WON! Instantly he was hooked, and soon Otto was entered in every Field Trail within driving distance. Eager to learn more, Corey took Otto to Roy Smith for formal training. As a result of pestering Roy every day on Otto’s progress, he was invited to training trips in Oroville and Spenceville. Roy mentors Corey to this day on everything dog related. Corey has become Roy’s partner at the Field Trials, scouting for all dogs and also handling client dogs in the Amateur stakes.
